Paddleboard Champ/Team Hawaii ISA World Championship Competitor/Lifeguard
Passions: Paddling, Competition, Family
Philosophy: Get the lead out.
Kai brought home bronze with Team Hawaii for the ISA World Championship in Mexico. The North Shore waterman was picked to represent Hawaii in prone paddling, where he took 4th and 5th.
Paddling is Kai's passion. He says, “I love the camaraderie with everyone in the paddling community and it brings me to the place I love which is the ocean.” Ironically, he was discouraged when he first tried paddling and he put his paddle board away for an entire year. Kai gave it a second chance and took first in his first paddle board race. He’s been hooked ever since and keeps racking up titles.
Kai gets his competitive fire from his parents. They’re his role models because they are still training hard in their sixties. He considers his two daughters his proudest accomplishment. His goal is to win the ISA world championships for Team Hawaii and would like one day to paddle Kauai’s Na Pali Coast.
3 QUESTIONS with KAI:
What 3 words best describe you?
Competitive, outgoing, unorganized
What’s your ritual to get pumped up before a big race?
A little bit of Calvin Harris in my ears, big bowl of oatmeal with fresh fruit. Take a deep breath just before the race begins, pound a GR3EN and focus on crushing my competition.
What’s the some of the best advice you’ve gotten?
My wife always says "instead of saying I don't have time, say I didn't make time and see how your priorities shift". And she is always right even when she is not.
